Selling on Multiple Marketplaces: A Practical Checklist for UK Retailers

By the VA Expert Pro team 6 min read

Adding eBay, TikTok Shop or OnBuy to your Amazon or Shopify business can reduce risk, but only if your operations are ready. Use this checklist first.

Relying on a single marketplace leaves a business exposed to fee changes, policy updates and account restrictions. Expanding to additional channels can spread that risk and reach new customers. Without preparation, however, it can also multiply your workload and introduce costly errors.

1. Get your product data in order

Each marketplace has its own category structure and required attributes. Before you expand, make sure every product has complete, consistent data in a central place, such as a spreadsheet, PIM or inventory system. It is much easier to adapt clean data than to fix errors on several platforms at once.

2. Decide how stock will be synchronised

Overselling is the most common multi-channel mistake. A multi-channel inventory tool can update stock levels across platforms automatically. If you are starting small, consider allocating a fixed buffer of stock to each new channel.

3. Understand each platform's rules

  • Dispatch and delivery expectations
  • Returns policies and timeframes
  • Buyer messaging rules and response times
  • Restricted categories and product compliance requirements

4. Plan for customer service

Every new channel means a new inbox. A central help desk that connects to your marketplaces makes it far easier to keep response times consistent.

5. Measure profitability by channel

Fees, advertising costs and return rates vary between marketplaces. Track profit per channel, not just revenue, so you can decide where to invest your time.
